Summary of Quality Assurance Technician

The Quality Assurance Technician is responsible for performing quality auditing functions by testing, collecting data, and analyzing. In addition, this position is responsible for QA/QC procedures, processes, and controls in accordance with regulatory requirements and customer specifications including completing thorough inspections and generating written documentation, when necessary, in order to detect and rectify deficiencies in a timely manner.

Role and Responsibilities of Quality Assurance Technician

  • Perform risk-based analysis of non-conforming products or procedures and make decisions or corrections accordingly
  • Verify that product codes, labels, cases, cartons, packages, seals, and shrink-wrap are correct according to customer specifications
  • Monitor and inspect production lines to ensure that quality and package integrity are within specifications
  • Assist in ensuring that the production team meets the health, sanitation and quality standards set by the company, food industry and government agencies
  • Contribute to the maintenance and continuous improvement of the HACCP, SQF, and GMP policies
  • Perform all tasks with an emphasis on safety to ensure achievement of Quality, Service, and cost objectives
  • Comply with all standard operating procedures and requirements under the SQF, HACCP and GMP programs and ensure compliance with all applicable food laws & regulations, including SQF compliance
  • Accept, hold or reject products, in-process samples, and finished goods in accordance with the Company's quality procedures
  • Maintain all necessary QA records and help prepare third-party audits and plant inspections with key customers and regulatory agencies
  • Act as an SQF Practitioner including training to lead audits with third-party agencies
  • Maintain testing policies and procedures and ensure that testing logs are organized, maintained and up to date
  • Check environmental indicators such as temperatures and microbiological samplings to ensure the facility is safe to run product
  • Promptly notify proper personnel of any food safety, food quality or other issues.
  • Make daily quality decisions in the absence of the QA Manager
  • Support and in some cases lead investigations of process or product failures.

  • All other duties as assigned

Additional Duties and Responsibilities of Quality Assurance Technician

  • Manage a variety of shifting deadlines through multi-tasking and turning projects/initiatives to on-time completions


Absence Reporting

In the event of absence, all duties and responsibilities outlined above fall to the QA Manager and SQF Practitioner. In the event that both positions are absent, all duties and responsibilities outlined above fall to the Supply Chain Manager.

Qualifications and Education Requirements 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • 3 - 5 years of manufacturing experience within the food/beverage industry.
  • 1 - 3 years of Quality Assurance and/or laboratory experience or additional education which includes laboratory experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology and/or other science preferred or Associate's degree with equivalent experience
  • Day-to-day QA, food safety or laboratory experience
  • Ability to become a SQF Practitioner
  • Strong leadership, independent thinking, organizational abilities and analytical skills
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand instructions given in English.
  • Ability to work eight-hour shifts, 12 hour shifts or other work schedules as determined by business need, including overtime as required.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills are essential
  • Must have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Knowledge of SQF, HACCP, sanitation, GMPs, and general food safety and quality
  • Ability to read and analyze technical procedures, or governmental regulations and write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Demonstrated experience developing, writing and implementing SOPs and SSOPs
  • Work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical situations
  • Ability to work independently and utilize fact-based decisions.
  • Detail oriented and able to multi-task
  • Experience with recalls, lot control and traceability
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skill
  • Motivated self-starter with strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with all levels of employees
  • Proficient at using PC application; including Microsoft Office
  • Detailed and thorough record keeping and process documentation skills
