Summary of Buyer Position

The Buyer position on our replenishment team is responsible for ensuring that the products needed to supply our customers are purchased from specified suppliers and are delivered according to agreed terms and conditions. The buyer also takes an active role in seeking maximum value for the company through timely delivery, consolidated purchases, proper forecasting and cost effective agreements while working with supplies on ways to advance our products and services for the customer.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Exercise authority to purchase, at the most favorable price consistent with quality, quantity, delivery and other factors, supplies for the operation of the organization
  • Place orders with assigned vendors using established purchasing systems and processes
  • Make recommendations for substitutions where savings in cost or better quality or delivery can be realized
  • Obtain and analyze quotations on non-standard items and continually audit prices of standard materials and supplies
  • Prepare bids, receive bids and make purchases of goods where the financial impact is moderate ensuring that cost saving measures, financial goals and product quality are all protected
  • Collaborate with team members on projects, requests, and problem-solving initiatives, internally and externally and with cross-functional teams to ensure timeliness and quality of customer order fulfillment
  • Assist in the management of production scheduling including communicating with the production planner and other team members on the availability of product and aligning delivery and product availability opportunities to maximize production efficiency
  • Provide backup with inventory control and tracking when needed
  • Identify opportunities utilizing negotiation skills, collaboration, and communication skills to help prioritize resources and gain new supplier relationships
  • Provide manager and other stakeholders with on-going information regarding projects, issues and changes to plans or products
  • Confer with vendors to obtain product or service information, such as price, availability, and delivery schedule
  • Works out remedies and make recommendations for defective or unacceptable goods or services with inspection or quality control personnel, users, vendors and others
  • Lend expertise in the purchasing planning process including improving policies and procedures, offering cost saving measures and other departmental initiatives that will help align the department with goals and objectives
  • Foster collaborative partnerships with external vendors and suppliers in an effort to create value added opportunities for the company and its customers
  • Model the organizational values of thinking innovatively; optimizing solutions with a customer focus; operating with integrity and a sense of urgency; delivering unmatched quality and setting a standard for food safety; leading change; and being accountable.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Effectively manage difficult relationships and tough issues while also enhancing the company's position as a strategic business partner
  • Manage a variety of shifting deadlines through multi-tasking and turning projects/initiatives to on-time completions
  • Contribute and drive initiatives that improve company profitability, product quality and order efficiency

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Associate or Bachelor's degree in business or related field or equivalent experience required. Purchasing, buying or procurement experience preferred. Prior experience in food brokerage or food distribution is helpful.  Prior experience in food, CPG, food distribution, or perishable product experience helpful.

  • Strong understanding of product metrics such as packaging, shelf life, and lot rotation
  • Proficient at using PC application
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to get consistent results
  • Strong understanding of the roles and importance of vendor relationships and ability to manage vendors to provide business solutions that address key business needs
  • Able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, fractions, etc.
